A Collective Step Towards a Drug-Free Society
The increasing menace of drug abuse among young people has emerged as one of the greatest social challenges confronting our society today. Substance abuse not only destroys the lives of individuals but also tears apart families, weakens communities, and adversely affects the progress of the nation. Recognizing the seriousness of this issue and reaffirming its commitment towards social welfare and community awareness, the All India Malayalee Association (AIMA), Goa State Unit, organized an Anti-Drugs Awareness Campaign on 26 June 2026 at The Popular High School, Margao, Goa, in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
The programme was conceived with the objective of educating students about the harmful consequences of drug addiction, creating awareness among parents and teachers, and encouraging society to join hands in protecting the younger generation from the growing threat of substance abuse. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, members of the teaching fraternity, parents, social workers, and members of AIMA, transforming the programme into a meaningful movement against drug abuse.
Distinguished Guests Grace the Occasion
The programme was graced by Shri Santhosh Desai, Former Superintendent of Police, South Goa, as the Chief Guest. His vast experience in law enforcement and his deep understanding of the social consequences of narcotic abuse made his presence particularly significant for the occasion.
The event was further honoured by the presence of Mrs. Deepti Nair, Vice Chairperson of the AIMA National Women’s Wing, who attended as the Special Guest and delivered an inspiring message highlighting the collective responsibility of families, educational institutions, and society in combating drug addiction.
The function was presided over by the Principal of The Popular High School, who welcomed the distinguished guests and appreciated the initiative undertaken by AIMA in bringing such a socially relevant and timely awareness programme to the school.
Active Participation of AIMA Goa State Unit
The success of the programme was made possible through the wholehearted involvement and dedicated efforts of the office bearers and executive members of the AIMA Goa State Unit.
Shri Raju Nambiar, President of AIMA Goa State Unit, Shri Shamsudheen, Secretary, Smt. Shashikala Shankaranarayanan, Lady Convener, Shri Mohankumar, Treasurer, Shri K.R.S. Nair, Chairman, and Executive Committee Members Shri Abhi Nambiar, Shri E. Manoj, and Shri Shankaranarayanan actively participated in the programme and extended their full support to ensure its successful conduct.
Their collective participation reflected the organization’s commitment towards social responsibility and demonstrated AIMA’s continued efforts in addressing issues that affect society, particularly the youth.
Inspiring Address by the Chief Guest
Addressing the gathering, Shri Santhosh Desai spoke extensively on the alarming rise of drug abuse among young people and the devastating impact it has on individuals and society. He explained that addiction often begins with curiosity, peer pressure, or experimentation but gradually transforms into a destructive habit that damages physical health, mental well-being, and social relationships.
He pointed out that drug addiction has become one of the leading causes of educational dropouts, family conflicts, criminal activities, and emotional trauma among youth. He reminded the students that every individual possesses immense potential and that substance abuse only diverts them from their dreams and aspirations.
Drawing from his years of experience in the police service, he narrated how many promising young lives have been ruined because of addiction and urged students to remain vigilant, make wise choices, and never succumb to peer pressure. He emphasized that saying “No” to drugs is an act of courage and self-respect and encouraged the students to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to society.
Address by Mrs. Deepti Nair
In her inspiring address, Mrs. Deepti Nair highlighted the indispensable role played by families, educational institutions, and community organizations in preventing drug abuse among children and young adults.
She stressed that the fight against drugs cannot be won solely through law enforcement measures. Prevention begins at home through open communication between parents and children and is strengthened in schools where teachers can identify behavioural changes and provide timely guidance and support.
She encouraged students to believe in their dreams, maintain healthy friendships, and seek guidance whenever they face difficulties or emotional challenges. She reminded everyone that addiction often thrives in silence and isolation and therefore society must create an environment where young people feel heard, understood, and supported.
Her message inspired the students to become ambassadors of a drug-free society and to spread awareness among their friends and communities.
The Growing Threat of Drug Abuse
