AIMA Uttar Pradesh’s Focus on Sustainable Development Goal-3: Installation of Sanitary Napkin Vending Machines in Girls’ Colleges

As part of its ongoing commitment to Sustainable Development Goal-3 (Good Health and Well-being), the All India Malayalee Association (AIMA) Uttar Pradesh Unit has undertaken a significant initiative aimed at improving menstrual hygiene management in educational institutions. This initiative focuses on installing sanitary napkin vending machines at various girls’ colleges in Uttar Pradesh. The first phase of the project has seen the installation of three sanitary napkin vending machines at Mahamaya Balika Inter College, Noida, and KCS Inter Girls College, Dadri, Greater Noida.

Initiative Led by Ms. Deepti Nair

The driving force behind this crucial initiative is Ms. Deepti Nair, a seasoned health professional, expert in women’s health issues, and the National Vice Chairperson of AIMA’s Women’s Wing. Serving also as the Convener of the Women’s Wing in Uttar Pradesh, Ms. Nair identified the pressing need for accessible menstrual hygiene products in girls’ schools and colleges. She played a pivotal role in conceptualizing and implementing this project in collaboration with the AIMA Uttar Pradesh Unit.

Project Implementation and Impact

The installation of sanitary napkin vending machines in these educational institutions is a significant step toward ensuring that young women have easy access to essential menstrual hygiene products. This initiative addresses a critical aspect of health and well-being for female students, enabling them to manage their menstrual health with dignity and comfort. By making sanitary napkins readily available, the project aims to reduce absenteeism among female students during their menstrual periods and promote a healthier, more supportive learning environment.

Acknowledgment by Government and Social Organizations

The initiative has received widespread recognition and support from various wings of government organizations and other social entities. The proactive approach of AIMA Uttar Pradesh in addressing this often-overlooked aspect of women’s health has been lauded as a model that other organizations and institutions should emulate. The success of this project underscores the importance of collaboration between non-governmental organizations, government bodies, and the community in achieving Sustainable Development Goals.

Call to Action for State Committees

In light of the positive impact of this initiative, AIMA encourages all state committees to adopt and implement similar projects across the country. By installing sanitary napkin vending machines in girls’ schools and colleges nationwide, AIMA can significantly contribute to improving menstrual hygiene management, thereby advancing the health and well-being of young women across India.

This initiative is not just a step toward achieving Sustainable Development Goal-3 but also a reflection of AIMA’s commitment to empowering women and promoting gender equality through practical, impactful actions.
