The association has become a beacon of hope for those in need—whether victims of natural disasters, children seeking educational support, or families requiring assistance.

Their activities, spanning over two decades, showcase a holistic approach to welfare: humanitarian relief, infrastructure development, cultural preservation, education empowerment, and community welfare.

Humanitarian & Rehabilitation Initiatives

Earthquake Relief and Rehabilitation (2001–2003)

KMWA was born in the aftermath of the devastating Kutch Earthquake of January 2001, which left thousands homeless and displaced. Recognizing the urgent need for rehabilitation, the association was formed with the sole purpose of extending relief.

In collaboration with the Malayala Manorama Charitable Trust, Kottayam, KMWA successfully constructed 40 permanent houses for earthquake victims at Adipur. This cluster of homes, later named Malayala Manorama Nagar, stands as a symbol of compassion and solidarity. In June 2003, the homes were officially handed over to families—marking one of the earliest large-scale community-driven rehabilitation initiatives in the region.

Support During Major National Disasters

KMWA has consistently extended help beyond state boundaries whenever the nation faced calamity.

  • A special team visited Tsunami-hit areas in South India (2005) and offered direct relief to victims.
  • Another team reached Banaskantha (2017) to support flood-affected families, distributing relief materials to 300 families.
  • During the Kerala floods of 2018, KMWA sent 12 tons of relief materials, ensuring transparency and delivery to genuine victims.
  • Members personally visited flood-hit Chengannur, distributing necessities to 120 families who had lost almost everything.

Going one step ahead, the association also constructed two houses for Kerala flood victims—an extraordinary gesture of compassion.

COVID-19 Contribution

During the pandemic, KMWA joined hands with other NGOs to financially support a free COVID treatment hospital in Adipur (2021), reflecting their commitment to health and community safety.

Infrastructure & Community Development

KMWA has undertaken multiple infrastructure projects that have improved quality of life for residents:

  • A 24-hour free water supply system was provided to Gokuldham–Manorama Complex, benefiting numerous families.
  • Efforts with the Railways resulted in a manned level crossing gate, ensuring safety and convenience.
  • A bus waiting shed constructed by the association was handed over to Gandhidham Municipality in 2005.
  • In 2006, a large cultural stage was built at Gokuldham–Manorama Complex, giving residents a space to host events, festivals, and cultural functions.

KMWA has gone beyond Kutch, organizing mathematics enrichment seminars in Ahmedabad, Raipur, Tilda, Bachhau, and other regions, showcasing its expanding impact.

Malayalam Language Promotion

In 2015, KMWA began the Kanikkonna Malayalam course to preserve language and culture among the younger generation. The Kerala Government officially recognized the course in 2017 and deputed examiners. All students appearing from KMWA passed and received government certificates—a proud moment for the community.

Higher-level courses like Suryakanthi and Ambal were also introduced, creating a structured, multi-level Malayalam learning system rarely seen outside Kerala.

Chairman’s Perspective – A Message of Pride and Gratitude

Words from PN Sreekumar, Chairman – AIMA Voice 2025

“AIMA Voice 2025 has successfully completed two phases. Now, only the final round—the Grand Finale—remains. Preparations for the finale are progressing smoothly. As we complete the first two phases, there is immense satisfaction. After almost eight years, AIMA has returned with a music competition. The initial concerns disappeared once registrations were completed, as this year we received a record number of participants.

A Vibrant Presence in Social Work – The Inspiring Journey of Adv. Rakhee Sunil

In the heart of Mumbai—a city known for its fast-paced lifestyle, towering ambitions, and diverse cultures—there are individuals who consciously slow down to hear the unheard, uplift the marginalized, and extend a helping hand without expecting anything in return. Adv. Rakhee Sunil is one such exceptional figure. Over the past fourteen years, she has emerged as a vibrant and respected presence in Mumbai’s social, cultural, and humanitarian sectors, proving that leadership thrives not in titles alone, but in compassion, resilience, and purpose.

A Journey Rooted in Knowledge and Empowerment

Rakhee’s accomplishments rest on an exceptional academic foundation. After completing her Bachelor of Commerce, she expanded her horizons with Postgraduate Studies in Management, gaining insights into administration and organizational dynamics. Her pursuit of a law degree added depth to her understanding of justice, rights, and societal obligations. Later, she strengthened her social vision further by studying Human Rights, a field that aligned perfectly with her passion for advocacy and service.

This diverse academic path reflects her belief that knowledge empowers service. Each degree she earned became a tool—sharpening her ability to engage with communities, address grievances, and navigate complex social issues with sensitivity and clarity.

Stepping Into a Male-Dominated Space: A Move of Courage

When Rakhee entered the realm of social work, it was not a space bustling with women leaders, especially in the metropolitan setting of Mumbai. Many women hesitated to step out due to social constraints, cultural expectations, or a lack of opportunities. But Rakhee believed in something much stronger:
Social work must be sincere, impactful, and rooted in real change—not just a badge of prestige.

With this conviction, she gradually carved a niche of her own. What set her apart was her refusal to be a passive participant. She actively identified the gaps in society and worked tirelessly to fill them, creating meaningful pathways where none previously existed.

Her early years in public life were filled with challenges, but they only strengthened her resolve. Rakhee’s journey stands as a testament to how women can redefine boundaries, reshape leadership, and create movements of change simply by stepping forward with confidence.

A Professional Life That Deepened Her Social Vision

Rakhee’s professional background provided her a unique advantage as a social worker. For nearly three decades, she worked as an advisor with Life Insurance Corporation and New India Assurance Company, where she interacted daily with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.

Through these interactions, she observed firsthand the struggles families face—financial insecurity, lack of awareness, gender disparities, educational challenges, and emotional distress. These experiences shaped her empathetic approach to social work. She didn’t merely want to help people; she wanted to understand them.

Her advisory role taught her patience, communication, and the importance of trust—qualities that later became the foundation of her social initiatives.

Leadership That Transcends Community Boundaries

Rakhee’s journey as a leader is not confined to one organization. Her contributions span multiple platforms across Mumbai, reflecting her versatility and dynamic nature.

Influence Among Malayali Organisations

The Malayali community in Mumbai is vibrant and deeply rooted in cultural heritage. Rakhee rose to prominence within this space, holding several significant positions:

  • Convener of the Women’s Wing – All India Malayali Association (Maharashtra)
  • Joint Secretary – World Malayali Federation (Maharashtra Unit)
  • General Secretary – Malad Bombay Keralite Samaj, one of the city’s most established Malayali organizations
  • First woman General Secretary in the 55-year history of Borivali Malayali Samaj—a landmark achievement that broke long-standing gender barriers

In these roles, Rakhee not only organized cultural festivals and community gatherings but also initiated welfare programs, women’s empowerment sessions, and youth development activities. Her leadership helped bring a modern, inclusive, and progressive outlook to community organizations that were historically male-led.

Prominent Roles in Rotary and Other Service Clubs

Rakhee’s leadership extended far beyond community circles into globally recognized humanitarian organizations. Her association with Rotary—an international network dedicated to service—brought her work to a larger platform. She handled prestigious roles such as:

  • President – Rotary Club Borivali East
  • President – Inner Wheel Club, Dahisar
  • Assistant Governor – Rotary District 3141

Rotary District 3141 is known for impactful initiatives related to healthcare, education, environment, and women’s welfare. As Assistant Governor, Rakhee played a key role in strengthening these initiatives, encouraging collaborative projects, and motivating individuals to contribute to society meaningfully.

Cultural Leadership That Made History

Rakhee’s involvement with the Loka Kerala Sabha, a prestigious body that connects Malayalis around the world, further highlighted her recognition at global and governmental levels.

One of her most notable achievements was her role as the Western Region Coordinator for the Mumbai Pooram Kailottikkali event—an event that entered the Guinness Book of Records. This milestone showcased her ability to organize large-scale cultural activities that celebrate heritage while uniting people across continents.

A Woman With a Heart Larger Than Her Roles

Positions and titles alone cannot capture Rakhee’s essence. Her true impact lies in her personal acts of kindness and the initiatives she leads behind the scenes:

Educational Support

  • She has taken responsibility for the education of nearly 200 children, ensuring that financial hardships do not dim their futures.

Legal Aid

  • As a lawyer, she offers free legal support to the poor, helping them deal with disputes, documentation, and emotional stress.

Support for Orphanages & Elderly Homes

  • Rakhee consistently visits orphanages, special schools, and old-age homes, offering material support as well as companionship—something these institutions deeply cherish.

Disaster Relief Work

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when fear and uncertainty gripped the nation, Rakhee was on the front lines distributing essential supplies, coordinating medical support, and ensuring food reached those in isolation.

Likewise, during the flood disasters in Kerala and Maharashtra, she mobilized teams, raised funds, and personally ensured relief materials reached affected families.

Her approach to service has always been hands-on and heartfelt.

Awards That Celebrate a Life Devoted to Service

Rakhee’s contributions have earned her widespread recognition. Her awards include:

  • Vanita Ratnam Award
  • Best Social Worker Award – People’s Centre
  • Jwala Award – Outstanding Social Service
  • Women Achievers Award – Women Empowerment & Children’s Education
  • Saraswati Dadasaheb Phalke Iconic International Women’s Award
  • Rajiv Gandhi National Excellence Award
  • Inspirational Women’s Award
  • Enlight News Karma Shreshtha Award
  • WOW Pride Award – Her Story Times
  • Listed among the 100 Influential Women by the London-based Blissful Queens Organization

These honours reflect not just the scale of her work, but the sincerity behind it. They are symbols of the countless lives she has touched.

A Family Rooted in Service and Integrity

Rakhee grew up in an environment that valued ethics, education, and service.
She is the daughter of Adv. Padma Divakaran, a respected public figure and former Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, and K.V. Divakaran, who proudly served the Indian Navy before continuing his career in Saudi Arabia.

Her daughter, Adv. Nikita Sunil, carries the family legacy forward. As the District Rotaract Representative, she represents the youth wing of Rotary—continuing the tradition of leadership and service across generations.

Conclusion: A Legacy That Continues to Inspire

Adv. Rakhee Sunil is more than a social worker; she is a movement of compassion, a symbol of empowerment, and an inspiration for countless women who aspire to make a difference. Her journey illustrates that true leadership is not about occupying positions—it is about uplifting others, breaking barriers, and nurturing hope where it is needed the most.

In a world increasingly driven by self-interest, Rakhee stands as a reminder that one dedicated individual can truly transform communities. Her vibrant presence in Mumbai’s social landscape continues to inspire, influence, and illuminate—a legacy that will undoubtedly guide many generations to come.
