A Celebration of Tradition, Empowerment, and Community Bonding

A New Cultural Journey Begins

In an inspiring move to preserve and promote Kerala’s traditional art forms, the Women’s Wing of the All India Malayalee Association (AIMA) Uttar Pradesh State Unit is launching Chenda classes exclusively for ladies. This initiative was finalized after a successful initiation meeting held on 27th April 2025 at the Noida Ayyappa Temple, where enthusiastic discussions and planning sessions laid the foundation for this project.

The classes are set to commence from the first week of May 2025, and more than 12 ladies have already enrolled, showcasing the excitement and passion surrounding the initiative.

The Visionaries Behind the Initiative

The project was initiated through the dedicated efforts of:

  • Smt. Deepthi Nair, National Vice Chairperson, Women’s Wing & Convener, Women’s Wing AIMA U.P
  • Smt. Molly S Nair, Joint Convener, Women’s Wing
  • Smt. Prabha Rajan Joint Convener, Women’s Wing

Their combined vision to empower women and promote cultural heritage has been instrumental in making this dream a reality.

Introducing the Guru: Kalamandalam Abhishek Marar

Adding to the excitement, Kalamandalam Abhishek Marar, an acclaimed Chenda artist trained in the renowned Kalamandalam tradition, will be the Guru for these classes. His expertise, rich experience, and passion for the art will ensure that participants receive authentic, high-quality training in Chenda.

Learning under a teacher of such stature is a golden opportunity for the participants, providing them with deep insights into the techniques, rhythm structures, and cultural nuances of Chenda performances.

Why Chenda Classes Matter

The Chenda is more than just an instrument — it is a symbol of Kerala’s vibrant cultural identity. Traditionally played during temple festivals, religious ceremonies, and cultural celebrations, the Chenda’s rhythmic beats are deeply woven into the spiritual and cultural fabric of Kerala.

Introducing Chenda classes for ladies brings numerous benefits:

1. Cultural Preservation

The classes play a vital role in keeping alive Kerala’s traditional performing arts and ensuring they are passed on to future generations.

2. Empowerment of Women

Learning the Chenda, an instrument historically dominated by men, breaks gender barriers. It inspires confidence, leadership, and pride among women.

3. Physical and Mental Wellness

Chenda playing enhances physical strength, concentration, stamina, and mental discipline. It also provides a fulfilling outlet for creative expression and emotional well-being.

4. Building Stronger Communities

The classes will create a space for women to connect, share, and grow together, strengthening community bonds through shared cultural experiences.
